Carlos Aponte was born in New York and raised in Puerto Rico. he is most well known for his fashion illustrations which he makes using masking tape.
Aponte teaches drawing at the fashion institute of technology, having studied at Parson’s school of design.
He uses simple shapes in his illustrations to portray his visual storytelling and the glamour of the fashion world. The use of masking tape allows him to focus on models in an abstract way, such as on runways. His work has been featured in several publications.
Aponte’s work has inspired me to use tape as a medium for drawing. I like the way that it creates bold, simplistic lines and how effective the work looks without the need for a lot of detail. Additionally, the use of one or two colours also creates a simplistic yet striking look to the work, making it bright and eye-catching.
